The science of purring

A cat's purr is one of the most familiar sounds on earth and one of the least understood. Here is what researchers have actually established, what they have not, and where the internet quietly stops citing evidence.

01Nobody was sure how cats do it until recently

For fifty years the textbook answer was a neural oscillator: a signal from the brain telling the muscles of the voice box to twitch roughly 25 times a second, like an idling engine. It appeared in every article about cats, including ours.

In 2023 a team at the University of Vienna took larynges from domestic cats and found they could produce purr-frequency sound with no brain attached at all โ€” no nerve signal, no repeating muscle contractions. They identified pads of connective tissue in the vocal folds that let a small animal make a remarkably low sound, working much like the creaky vocal fry at the bottom of a human voice.

It does not close the question. Living cats clearly start and stop purring on purpose, so the brain is involved somewhere. But the confident explanation everyone repeated turned out to be incomplete.

A sound humans have lived beside for ten thousand years, and we are still arguing about where it comes from.

02What frequency a purr actually is

Low. Much lower than people expect from an animal that size. The 2023 measurements put domestic cat purrs around 20 to 30 Hz, with an average often quoted near 27 Hz. Across cat species the range usually cited is 25 to 150 Hz, counting the harmonics stacked above the fundamental.

Lower than almost anything you hear in a day. Below roughly 20 Hz humans stop hearing pitch and start feeling vibration instead โ€” a purr sits just above that line, which is why being near a purring cat is a physical sensation and not only a sound.

Two other things make purring unusual. It continues on both the in-breath and the out-breath, which is why it sounds unbroken โ€” most animal sounds only happen on the exhale. And an individual cat's purr frequency stays remarkably stable across its whole life.

Loudness varies enormously. A typical purr is a quiet 25 to 50 decibels. The record, held jointly by two rescue cats in England named Smokey and Merlin, is 67.8 dB โ€” about as loud as a vacuum cleaner.

03Where the healing claim comes from

You have seen the graphic: purrs are 25โ€“150 Hz, those frequencies are used in vibration therapy for bone healing, therefore purring heals. It is on thousands of pages. Here is what sits underneath it.

The frequency measurements trace back to work by Elizabeth von Muggenthaler, who recorded 44 cats across five species and found strong frequencies clustered near 25, 50 and 100 Hz. It is careful measurement โ€” but it was published as a conference abstract, not a full peer-reviewed study, and what it showed was that purr frequencies overlap frequencies used in therapy. It proposed healing as a hypothesis worth investigating. It did not demonstrate it.

Almost every "purrs heal bones" article you will find is ultimately citing that one abstract, usually without saying so.

Following the claim back to its source. Each step here is reasonable on its own. The problem is the last one โ€” an overlap in frequency is a reason to investigate, not a finding. Most of the internet reports step three and skips step five.

04Vibration therapy is real โ€” and more modest than advertised

The other half of the claim deserves better treatment than it usually gets, because low-intensity vibration is a genuine field with genuine results.

A 2021 randomised placebo-controlled trial put pre-osteoporotic women through a year of daily low-intensity vibration. It found statistically significant but modest improvements โ€” tibial stiffness rose slightly in the treated group while falling in the placebo group, and bone marrow fat decreased. The authors concluded the effect "at least stabilises postmenopausal bone loss."

Worth noting: standard bone density scans showed nothing. The changes only appeared under more sensitive imaging. Other trials have come back mixed. This is a promising area, not a settled one.

What the trial actually found. Read the numbers on that chart carefully โ€” a little over one percent, in opposite directions, after a full year of daily treatment. That is a real result, and it is nothing like the transformation the internet promises.

05The step nobody mentions

Vibration therapy works by transmitting mechanical force into the body โ€” you stand or sit on a plate that physically shakes your skeleton. Listening to a purr is sound arriving at your eardrums. Even if vibration therapy were completely proven, it would not transfer to a recording played through a speaker or a pair of headphones.

That is the whole argument in one paragraph, and it is why we make no health claims. A cat lying on your chest is genuinely transmitting vibration into you. A video of that cat is not. Those are different things, and the pages that blur them are selling something.

06Does sound actually help you sleep?

Here is where we have to be honest against our own interest.

The popular belief is that steady background sound helps you sleep by masking sudden noises. A 2021 systematic review of 38 studies found the overall picture looked positive โ€” but rated the evidence very low quality, with studies too different from one another to compare properly.

The same researchers then ran their own controlled sleep-lab study. Pink noise reduced REM sleep by over 18 minutes a night. Used to mask disruptive noise, it left people sleeping worse than the disruptive noise alone. Earplugs beat it comfortably.

Nobody has tested purring specifically, and a purr is not pink noise โ€” it is narrow, rhythmic and organic rather than a broad hiss. So this is not a finding about us. But it is the best evidence there is on the general idea, and it does not support the confident claims made across this entire genre, ours included.

08Why cats purr at all

Kittens purr within days of birth, while still blind and deaf. Their mother's purr is a vibration they can navigate towards; their purr back tells her they are alive and feeding. It begins as a signal between two animals that cannot yet see each other.

The cry hidden inside the purr

When cats want feeding, researchers found they embed a high-frequency cry inside the purr, sitting close to the frequency of a human baby's cry. People rated those purrs as more urgent and less pleasant โ€” including people who had never owned a cat. Cats appear to have evolved a sound humans are not able to ignore. The relaxed purr you get while stroking a cat does not contain it.

A purring cat is not always a happy cat

Cats also purr when frightened, injured, at the vet, and sometimes while dying. The likeliest explanation is self-soothing, possibly tied to endorphin release. If your cat is purring but something else seems wrong, trust the something else.

09Which cats can purr

Cheetahs, cougars, servals, ocelots, bobcats and lynx purr. Lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars cannot โ€” they roar instead. The difference is a small bone in the throat called the hyoid. Hardened, it allows the continuous vibration of a purr; more flexible, it allows a roar. No cat gets both.

Which means a cheetah can purr at you. A lion never will.

One small bone decides the whole thing. Every cat on the top row trades a roar for a purr, and every cat on the bottom row made the opposite trade. Nothing gets both.

10What we still don't know

Whether the 2023 mechanism is the whole story. Whether purring does anything measurable for the cat itself. Whether hearing a purr affects a human body in any way beyond the ordinary comfort of a familiar sound. And why, of all the animals that could have evolved this, it was mostly the small cats.
